A ground-breaking conference on head coverings is taking place in Harrogate, in collaboration with The Muslim Women’s Council and The Harrogate Branch of The Women’s Equality Party.

There is a common misconception that Islam is the only religion requiring women to wear head coverings, but this simply is not true.  Most religions require, or have required, head coverings - and not just for women.

In this conference, we will hear from Christian, Muslim and Jewish women on why they wear head coverings.  We will listen to their personal stories and how wearing head coverings impact their lives, in a bid to promote understanding and acknowledge the similarities as well as the differences.

The conference is open to everyone - women, men and teenagers - and will provide an opportunity for Questions and Answers at the end.  A lively debate is envisaged and the aim is for all our guests to leave more informed and celebrating the amazing stories of women who wear their faith with pride.

The Harrogate, Leeds, York and Sheffield branches of WEP have come a long way, and boast a thriving community of women and men committed to equality throughout Yorkshire and nationally.  The Harrogate branch took part in the Women’s March in January and meet monthly.

Viviane Morris, Harrogate Branch Leader(WE, Harrogate) said: “We are thrilled to put on such a topical seminar in Harrogate in partnership with The Muslim Women’s Council.  We are equally thrilled to have Sophie Walker, our Party Leader, speaking at the event.  Sophie is one of our candidates in the General Election and is standing in Shipley   ”

Bana Gora, CEO of The Muslim Women’s Council, says: ““Because of the current dialogue on head coverings, there is a need for women to reclaim and recentralize the narrative away from one of victimization and oppression. The Muslim Women’s Council carried out a project funded by the Heritage Lottery fund, engaging with women from various backgrounds. Through conversations with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim women we created a Book “Shared Heritage of The Daughters of Eve” which forms the basis of this Seminar”
