First Muslim and First Woman of Colour to Serve on the Blaine City Council

Lori Saroya, 41 years old, mother of three, became the first Muslim and first woman of color to serve on the Blaine City Council, Minnesota, United States.

Saroya, a first-time candidate, said

I am excited to get started. There is so much to do. I want to get things done.

Saroya's plans include investigating water quality concerns, addressing delayed municipal repairs, making development plans, tackling crime in the Northtown Mall area, and getting Highway 65 safer to travel on.

"Wearing a scarf, being a woman of color, I wondered if being elected was realistic," she said. "I never thought I could be in that position."

One of Saroya's primary concerns is to create a secure neighbourhood for children, as well as to combat bullying, mental health, and suicide.
